В комментарии объясняется, что обрыва нет, но по словам ТБ это не соответствует ни следующему дальше объяснению метафоры, ни реальному устройству океанского дна, ни правилам грамматики.

They seem to base their renderings on different variants of translation the word āyataka is given in the dictionary, which are in effect opposite to one another with TB preferring the 1st rendering while BB and Ireland - the 2nd
It occurs at least in one other sutta
https://suttacentral.net/pi/an5.209 where it has the first dictionary meaning, i.e. prolonged, stretched out, which would speak in favor of TB’s rendering
But i believe BB and Ireland are closer to the intended meaning, their rendering of the last phrase sounds more consistent with the preceding part of the sentence, it’s logical, and they keep the negating particle of the original, while TB makes it sound contrasting with the rest of the sentence completely omitting the negation

in Pali the negation is there to negate something which is contrary to the previous statement in order to strengthen its main idea, so if the previous statement asserts something as gradual the negated part has to be synonymous with something abrupt and sudden pointing at the second dictionary meaning of āyataka
It would be illogical to say for example “it’s bright, light, shiny, certainly not lucid”, but TB makes it sound that way and to avoid this effect he drops the negation replacing it with “only”

Кстати на эту тему ещё можно вспомнить повторяющихся фрагмент в суттах, где говорится "когда освобождён есть знание "освобождён"". Я так понимаю, это и символизирует "обрыв". Хотя для других путей/плодов такой формулы нет.
